This trek leads through landscapes covered by deep gorges, jagged plugs, and striking rock towers. Enroute, we climb some of Africa's highest peaks: Ras Dashen (4620m), Buyit Ras (3250m), and Bwahit (4430m). This park is a haven to many endemic species of wildlife and flora, including the Gelada Baboon, Walia Ibex, and many bird species. The park has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This trip is a perfect combination of Ethiopia’s incredible diversity of history and ancient civilization, culture, and nature. On this trekking adventure, you will also have the chance to interact with the local host community and witness the lifestyle and culture of the people living isolated in the mountains with a unique and ancient farming style.
Itinerary
Day 1: Addis Ababa
Arrive in Addis Ababa and transfer to the hotel. If you arrive in the morning, we can arrange an optional city tour.
Overnight: Hotel
Day 2: Addis Ababa, Gondar, Sankaber (3,200m)
Today we fly from Addis Ababa to Gondar and drive 136 km north to Sankaber.
Overnight: Camping
Day 3: Sankaber, Geech (3,550m)
Trek for 5–6 hours from Sankaber to Geech enroute enjoying the stunning views.
Overnight: Camping
Day 4: Geech, Imetgogo (3,986m), Geech
Trek 6 hours to Imetgogo to enjoy some of the best views in Simien Mountains National Park.
Overnight: Camping
Day 5: Geech, Chenek (3,600m)
Trek for approximately 7 hours from Geech to Chenek to spot some of the endemic mammals including the Walia Ibex.
Overnight: Camping
Day 6: Chenek, Ambiqo
Trek 6–8 hours from Chenek to Ambiqo climbing Buhit Mountain, the second-highest peak after Ras Dashen, in the Simien Mountain range.
Overnight: Camping
Day 7: Ambiqo, Ras Dashen (4,620m), Ambiqo
Trek 7–9 hours from Ambiqo climbing Ras Dashen, the highest peak in Ethiopia (4620 m), and return to Ambiqo.
Overnight: Camping
Day 8: Ambiqo, Cheneck
Trek 6–8 hours back to Cheneck. Enroute you may see the Simien Fox and/or the Ethiopian Wolf.
Overnight: Camping
Day 9: Chenek, Gondar
Drive back to Gondar. For the rest of the day, you will have a sightseeing tour of Gondar.
Overnight: Hotel
Day 10: Gondar, Addis Ababa
In the morning, fly back to Addis Ababa. Depending on your departure, we will take an optional city tour. In the evening, there will be farewell dinner party with a live traditional music show (flight schedule permitting). At the end of the farewell dinner, transfer to Addis Ababa airport for the flight back. End of tour.
